According to Deutsche Industrial Norm (DIN) 66334, figure 1 (note 1), until the 1988 edition of ISO 3166, 280 was the country code for Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Due to the unification of the two German states, the numerical country code for Germany was converted to 276. 280 as an exception exists only for those cases where 280 is incorporated in hardware or the code cannot be changed without significant hardware changes. Such exemptions are not described in DIN 66334.
